What Is Radon Therapy?

radon therapy is the medical use of naturally dissolved radon gas in thermal water. Radon is a noble gas produced by the radioactive decay of uranium in deep rock formations. In certain geologically rare locations — jáchymov in the Czech Ore Mountains, Świeradów-Zdrój in the Polish Iser Mountains — thermal water percolates through uranium-bearing granite, dissolving radon at concentrations of 1–3 kilobecquerel per litre.

The therapeutic mechanism is hormetic: a very low dose of radiation stimulates a protective biological response that far exceeds the stimulus. The alpha particles emitted by the dissolved radon penetrate only 40 micrometres into the skin — they do not reach living cells beneath the epidermis. But the energy they deposit in the upper skin layers triggers a signalling cascade that upregulates the genes for superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase throughout the body. These enzymes neutralise the free radicals — particularly superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide — that are massively overproduced in chronically inflamed joints and that progressively destroy cartilage and bone.

The effect is not symptomatic pain relief but a fundamental reduction in inflammatory activity at the cellular level. Joint swelling decreases, morning stiffness shortens, and inflammatory markers in the blood decline. The effect builds over the course of two to three weeks and persists for six to twelve months after the final bath.

The radiation dose is precisely controlled and extremely low. A 20-minute bath at 2 kBq/l delivers approximately 0.1–0.2 millisieverts — comparable to a dental X-ray. How Radon Therapy Works Step by Step

Before the first bath, the spa doctor conducts a thorough examination including blood tests and, for women of childbearing age, a pregnancy test. Bring current rheumatology reports, a medication list, and recent inflammatory marker results (CRP, ESR). The doctor determines the number and frequency of baths.

The radon bath is drawn at 36–38 °C — body-warm, not hot. The patient immerses up to the shoulders. The bath lasts 20 minutes. During the bath, the radon is absorbed through the skin. The patient feels warm and relaxed — the sensation is identical to a normal thermal bath. There is no tingling, no taste, no smell — radon is a colourless, odourless noble gas.

After the bath, the patient rests for 30 minutes in a rest room. During this period, the absorbed radon distributes through the bloodstream to all organs. A full course comprises 10–15 baths over two to three weeks. The first three to five baths are an induction phase.
