What Is Radon Therapy?
radon therapy is the medical use of naturally dissolved radon gas in thermal water. Radon is a noble gas produced by the radioactive decay of uranium in deep rock formations. In certain geologically rare locations — jáchymov in the Czech Ore Mountains, Świeradów-Zdrój in the Polish Iser Mountains — thermal water percolates through uranium-bearing granite, dissolving radon at concentrations of 1–3 kilobecquerel per litre.
The therapeutic mechanism is hormetic: a very low dose of radiation stimulates a protective biological response that far exceeds the stimulus. The alpha particles emitted by the dissolved radon penetrate only 40 micrometres into the skin — they do not reach living cells beneath the epidermis. But the energy they deposit in the upper skin layers triggers a signalling cascade that upregulates the genes for superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase throughout the body. These enzymes neutralise the free radicals — particularly superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide — that are massively overproduced in chronically inflamed joints and that progressively destroy cartilage and bone.
The effect is not symptomatic pain relief but a fundamental reduction in inflammatory activity at the cellular level. Joint swelling decreases, morning stiffness shortens, and inflammatory markers in the blood decline. The effect builds over the course of two to three weeks and persists for six to twelve months after the final bath.
The radiation dose is precisely controlled and extremely low. A 20-minute bath at 2 kBq/l delivers approximately 0.1–0.2 millisieverts — comparable to a dental X-ray. The entire course of 15 baths delivers 1.5–3 millisieverts — less than the natural annual background radiation in Germany (2.1 mSv). The radon is eliminated from the body within hours after each bath — it does not accumulate. Over more than a century of documented use at Jáchymov since 1906, no elevated cancer rates have been observed in spa patients.
radon therapy has three forms:
The radon bath — the primary treatment. The patient bathes for 20 minutes in 36–38 °C water with dissolved radon. After the bath, a 30-minute rest period allows the radon to distribute through the body. This is the most effective form of radon therapy and accounts for the majority of the therapeutic effect.
Radon inhalation — the patient breathes radon-containing air in a special chamber for 15–20 minutes. Absorption through the lungs delivers the alpha emitter systemically, complementing transdermal absorption from the baths.
Radon drinking cure — small quantities of radon-containing water are drunk. This is a traditional supplement in Jáchymov, though the bath remains the primary treatment.
Which Spas Offer Radon Therapy?
| Spa | Country | Radon Source | Concentration | ★ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jáchymov | Czech Republic | Former uranium mines — water flows directly from mine galleries | 1–3 kBq/l | ★★★ |
| Świeradów-Zdrój | Poland | Natural granite formations — water percolates through Iser Mountain bedrock | 1.5–2.5 kBq/l | ★★ |
Who Can Benefit from Radon Therapy?
| Condition | Recommended Spa | Mechanism |
|---|---|---|
| Rheumatoid Arthritis | Jáchymov | SOD and catalase activation suppresses inflammatory flares — effect 6–12 months |
| Bechterew’s Disease | Jáchymov | Radon baths + physiotherapy improve spinal mobility, inhibit bony stiffening |
| Psoriatic Arthritis | Jáchymov | Combined anti-inflammatory effect on joints and skin |
| Arthrosis (Severe) | Jáchymov, Świeradów-Zdrój | Endorphin release relieves pain, slows cartilage degradation |
| Gout | Jáchymov | Radon promotes uric acid excretion via liver enzyme activation |
| Fibromyalgia | Świeradów-Zdrój | Multimodal — radon + CO₂ baths + peat moor + mountain climate |
| Chronic Pain Syndromes | Świeradów-Zdrój | Endorphin release triggered by radon — long-lasting pain reduction |
Not suitable for: pregnancy, acute infections, active malignancy, severe cardiovascular insufficiency, and hyperthyroidism. The spa doctor determines individual suitability — a pregnancy test is required for women of childbearing age before starting radon therapy.
How Radon Therapy Works Step by Step
Before the first bath, the spa doctor conducts a thorough examination including blood tests and, for women of childbearing age, a pregnancy test. Bring current rheumatology reports, a medication list, and recent inflammatory marker results (CRP, ESR). The doctor determines the number and frequency of baths.
The radon bath is drawn at 36–38 °C — body-warm, not hot. The patient immerses up to the shoulders. The bath lasts 20 minutes. During the bath, the radon is absorbed through the skin. The patient feels warm and relaxed — the sensation is identical to a normal thermal bath. There is no tingling, no taste, no smell — radon is a colourless, odourless noble gas.
After the bath, the patient rests for 30 minutes in a rest room. During this period, the absorbed radon distributes through the bloodstream to all organs. This rest phase is therapeutically essential — the anti-inflammatory enzyme activation occurs during this distribution phase. Radon therapy — learn more.
A full course comprises 10–15 baths over two to three weeks. The first three to five baths are an induction phase. The full anti-inflammatory effect develops from the second week and peaks at the end of the third week. After the course, the radon is eliminated within hours; the enzyme activation persists for months.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is radon therapy not dangerous?
No — the dose is extremely low. A 20-minute radon bath equals roughly the radiation exposure of a dental X-ray. The entire three-week course of 15 baths delivers less radiation than the natural annual background radiation you receive simply by living in Germany. Over 100 years of documented use at Jáchymov, no elevated cancer rates have been recorded. The radon is eliminated within hours — it does not accumulate.
How long does the effect really last?
The anti-inflammatory effect of a course of 10–15 radon baths lasts six to twelve months. Many patients with rheumatoid arthritis and Bechterew’s disease remain largely symptom-free between annual courses. The effect is not placebo — it is a measured upregulation of anti-inflammatory enzymes that persists long after the radon has left the body.
Why only two radon spas?
Natural radon springs with therapeutically usable concentration are geologically extremely rare. They occur only where uranium-bearing rock, thermal water and natural shielding coincide. Jáchymov and Świeradów-Zdrój are the only two radon spas in Central Europe — together they serve the entire demand for radon therapy in the region.
What is the difference between Jáchymov and Świeradów-Zdrój?
Jáchymov has a higher radon concentration (1–3 kBq/l vs. 1.5–2.5 kBq/l) and over a century of clinical documentation — the reference centre for severe rheumatoid arthritis and Bechterew’s disease. Świeradów-Zdrój offers a gentler dose, a broader combination with CO₂ baths and peat moor, and a lower cost — better for moderate rheumatic conditions, fibromyalgia and patients seeking a quieter mountain setting.
