What Is a Moor Pack?

A moor pack is the application of therapeutic mud, peat or volcanic clay that has been naturally enriched with minerals, organic acids and — in some cases — bioactive compounds produced by specific algae and microorganisms during a maturation process lasting months to centuries. Unlike a simple warm compress, a moor pack acts through three simultaneous mechanisms: the heat penetrates deep into muscle and joint tissue; the organic and mineral compounds are absorbed through the skin; and the weight of the pack provides a mild compression that enhances both heat transfer and absorption.

moor packs differ fundamentally by origin and composition:

Sulfur mud (piešťany) — the Váh River mud, matured over millennia in the riverbed, is prepared with 100 percent thermal water at precisely 39 °C. At this temperature, hydrogen sulfide is released at maximum intensity and inhibits the enzymes that destroy joint cartilage. This is the most intensive anti-inflammatory mud therapy in Europe — the first choice for severe arthrosis.

Volcanic fango (Abano Terme) — the Euganean clay matures for six months in flowing 60 °C thermal water, colonised by thermophilic algae that produce natural corticosteroids. Applied at 48–50 °C, the fango delivers the hottest therapeutic pack temperature in Europe. The corticosteroids suppress joint inflammation with cortisone-like potency but without systemic side effects. The fango treats over 50 musculoskeletal and 17 dermatological diagnoses.

Iron-rich peat moor (Františkovy Lázně) — from centuries-old forest bogs, rich in humic acids and organic iron compounds. Heated to 42–45 °C and applied over the pelvic area, the moor delivers natural oestrogen-like compounds directly to the reproductive organs. This is the world’s leading gynaecological mud therapy — documented for over 230 years.

Parafango (Karlovy Vary) — a speciality combining natural peat moor with paraffin wax. The paraffin extends heat retention — the pack stays warm longer, delivering deeper and more sustained hyperthermia. Ideal for osteoarthritis of the hands and fingers.

Lake mud (Hévíz) — sulfur-rich sediment from the floor of the thermal lake, matured for months with 38 °C water. The mud is applied at 40–42 °C and complements the lake bathing therapy — gentler than Piešťany or Abano Terme, ideal for patients who cannot tolerate the most intensive heat.

How a Moor Pack Works Step by Step

Before the first treatment, the spa doctor conducts an examination and determines which type of mud or moor, at what temperature, and applied to which body area. Bring current medical reports, particularly imaging results for joint conditions.

The moor pack is applied at the prescribed temperature — 39 °C in Piešťany, 48–50 °C in Abano Terme — as a full-body or partial pack. The patient lies in a tub or on a treatment table, and the warm mud is spread over the body or the affected joints. The application lasts 15–20 minutes. The heat is intense but not painful — the mud transmits heat differently than water, more gradually and more deeply.

After the pack, the mud is rinsed off with thermal water. The patient is then wrapped in thermal foil and sweats passively for 20 minutes. During this phase, the bioactive compounds absorbed into the skin reach their maximum concentration in the tissue. The hydrogen sulfide in Piešťany, the natural corticosteroids in Abano Terme, and the oestrogen-like humic acids in Františkovy Lázně continue to act during the sweating phase.

A course comprises 12–18 packs over two to three weeks. The first three to five packs are an adaptation phase — the full therapeutic effect develops from the second week. After the final pack, the anti-inflammatory effect lasts for months.

What to bring: the spa provides everything — the mud, the thermal foil, the rinsing facilities. You need only arrive at the treatment room at the appointed time. After the pack, a bathrobe is provided for the rest period. Moor pack treatment — learn more about the full programme.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which moor pack is the strongest?

Abano Terme’s fango at 48–50 °C delivers the hottest temperature and natural corticosteroids — the most intensive single application. Piešťany’s sulfur mud at 39 °C, with 18–24 repetitions over three weeks, delivers the strongest cumulative anti-inflammatory effect. Choose Abano for maximum heat per session; choose Piešťany for maximum anti-inflammatory effect over the full course.

Does the mud smell unpleasant?

Sulfur mud has a characteristic hydrogen sulfide smell — similar to the scent of hot springs. Most patients adapt within the first session. The therapeutic effect far outweighs any olfactory adjustment.

How long does the effect of a moor pack course last?

The anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effect of a course of 12–18 packs lasts three to six months. Many patients repeat the course annually. In Abano Terme, the natural corticosteroids produce a particularly sustained effect — some patients report six to nine months of improved joint mobility.

Can I combine moor packs with thermal baths?

Yes — this is the standard programme. The thermal bath prepares the muscles and opens the pores; the subsequent moor pack acts more intensively. The sequence is typically thermal bath in the morning, moor pack in the afternoon, planned by the spa doctor so that the circulation is not overloaded. Thermal bath treatment — learn more.
