What Is Electrotherapy?
electrotherapy encompasses a family of treatments that use externally applied electrical or wave energy to produce a physiological effect. The forms differ in the type of energy used and the condition they treat:
TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) β low-voltage electrical pulses are delivered through electrodes placed on the skin over the painful area. The pulses stimulate sensory nerves, which send signals to the spinal cord that “close the gate” to pain transmission β the gate control theory of pain. TENS also triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s own opioid-like painkillers. The effect is immediate pain relief without medication. TENS is used for chronic back pain, arthrosis, neuropathic pain and post-operative pain.
Ultrasound therapy β high-frequency sound waves (1β3 MHz) are delivered through a handheld probe moved over the skin. The sound waves penetrate 3β5 centimetres into the tissue, generating microscopic vibration and heat at the cellular level. This deep micro-massage increases blood flow, reduces muscle spasm, breaks down scar tissue adhesions, and accelerates healing. Ultrasound is particularly effective for tendonitis, bursitis, scar tissue mobilisation and joint capsule inflammation.
diadynamic currents β low-frequency currents (50β100 Hz) that are modulated in specific patterns to produce different effects: pain relief (the “gate” mechanism), muscle stimulation (for atrophied muscles), and improved circulation. Diadynamic therapy is used for muscle re-education after injury or surgery, chronic pain syndromes and peripheral circulatory disorders.
Iontophoresis β a low-level direct current drives ionised medication molecules through the skin into the underlying tissue. The current itself has a mild anti-inflammatory effect, and the medication β typically an anti-inflammatory or analgesic β is delivered directly to the target site, bypassing the digestive system. Iontophoresis is used for localised joint and tendon inflammation.
Four-chamber galvanic baths β the patient immerses arms and legs in four separate water baths through which a mild galvanic current is passed. The current improves peripheral circulation and has a general sedative effect. Used for peripheral arterial disease, Raynaud’s syndrome and general circulatory weakness.

Can I combine electrotherapy with other spa treatments?
