Treatments in Teplice

Pearl bath: Invented in Teplice in the 19th century. Fine CO₂ bubbles rise from the bottom of a 34 °C thermal bath and pearl on the skin — each bubble a micro-massage that stimulates skin receptors and expands capillaries. The effect is twofold: the CO₂ dilates blood vessels, lowering blood pressure, and the thousands of tiny bubbles provide a mechanical massage that is both more intensive and more pleasant than a jet-based hydromassage. The pearl bath is the most enjoyable form of CO₂ therapy — patients describe it as the highlight of their spa day. CO₂ bath treatment — learn more.

underwater traction: The spine is gently stretched in 38 °C thermal water using body weight. The heat eliminates muscle counter-reflexes — the intervertebral discs decompress without resistance. This is the most effective non-surgical treatment for herniated disc and chronic back pain in the northern Czech spas. Three sessions per week, 20 minutes each.

CO₂ bath: The natural CO₂ in the thermal water — 375 mg/l — is used in full baths at 33–35 °C. The gas dilates capillaries, lowers blood pressure, and improves cardiac output. Teplice’s CO₂ baths are less intense than Mariánské Lázně’s (which have up to 2,500 mg/l CO₂) — this makes them safer for patients with more compromised cardiovascular function who could not tolerate the stronger Mariánské Lázně baths.

Underwater massage: A powerful thermal-water jet massages the body from 20 centimetres distance under water. The jet is stronger than a manual massage but softer — it reaches deep muscle layers without causing pressure points or bruising. Particularly effective for chronic muscular tension and fibromyalgia.

History and Atmosphere

According to legend, Teplice was discovered in 762 AD when a swineherd saw his pigs wallowing in a warm spring and noticed their skin conditions clearing. The first documented bathing facility dates to the 12th century. By the 19th century, Teplice had become a meeting point for European cultural elites — not merely a medical spa but a social and artistic centre.

Ludwig van Beethoven stayed in Teplice in 1811 and 1812, composing parts of his 7th Symphony here. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe travelled to Teplice specifically to meet Beethoven — the famous encounter of the two geniuses took place on the streets of Teplice in 1812. Frédéric Chopin performed in the Kursaal in 1835. Casanova spent his final years as librarian to Count Waldstein at nearby Duchcov Castle.

The composer Richard Wagner conducted in Teplice. The poet Heinrich Heine took the waters. The Prussian Queen Luise was a regular guest. Teplice was, for a period, the most fashionable spa in the Habsburg Empire — its proximity to Dresden and the Saxon court gave it a cosmopolitan clientele that rivalled Karlovy Vary.

Today, Teplice is a city of 50,000 — more urban and less exclusively spa-focused than the Triangle resorts. The spa district centres around the Stone Bath (Kamenné lázně), a neoclassical building from 1832 with a Doric columned hall considered one of the most beautiful spa buildings in Europe, and the Emperor Bath. The Beethoven House — where the composer stayed — is a museum. The Botanical Garden, founded in 1895, is one of the oldest in the country. For guests who prefer an urban spa with a living city around it, Teplice is the right choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pearl bath exactly?

A bath in 34 °C thermal water through which fine CO₂ bubbles rise from the bottom. Each bubble bursts on the skin, creating a gentle micro-massage. The skin reddens visibly — a sign of increased blood flow. It feels like a spa bath with thousands of tiny pearls, completely pain-free. The pearl bath was invented in Teplice and remains its signature treatment.

Is Teplice more urban than other Czech spas?

Yes — Teplice is a working city of 50,000 with industry and commerce, not a dedicated spa town. The spa district is concentrated around the Stone Bath and Emperor Bath, separated from the city centre. If you want a self-contained spa world like Karlovy Vary or Mariánské Lázně, Teplice may feel too urban. If you enjoy having cafés, shops and a living city outside the spa hotel, Teplice works well.

Why Teplice for cardiovascular rehabilitation?

The thermal water’s relatively low mineralisation (compared to Karlovy Vary’s 6.8 g/l) and moderate temperature (30–44 °C) do not stress the heart. The natural CO₂ content of 375 mg/l provides vasodilation without the intensity of Mariánské Lázně’s 2,500 mg/l CO₂ baths — safer for patients with compromised cardiovascular function. The flat spa park allows dosed walking training.

Can Teplice be combined with other Czech spas?

Teplice is 100 kilometres from Karlovy Vary and 130 kilometres from Mariánské Lázně. A combination of one week Teplice for cardiovascular treatment and two weeks in the Triangle for digestion or kidneys is possible, though the distances are greater than within the Triangle itself.
