Treatments in Portorož

Fango delle Saline mud pack: The unique Portorož treatment. The black mud from the Sečovlje salt pans — matured over months in shallow basins with seawater and algae — is heated to 45–48 °C and applied as a full-body or partial pack. The mud contains a unique mixture of sea salt, algal bioactive compounds and organic acids that penetrate deep into joint capsules through the opened skin pores. The pack lasts 20 minutes, followed by 20 minutes of passive sweating. A course of 12–15 packs is standard. Moor pack treatment — learn more.

Thermal bath: The 37 °C thermal-mineral water from 1,200 metres depth — containing sodium, chloride, iodine and bromine — is used as a full bath. The temperature is ideal for muscle relaxation without cardiovascular stress. The iodine and bromine are absorbed transdermally and act on the thyroid and nervous system.

Thalassotherapy: The full marine programme — seawater baths in the Adriatic, algae packs and aerosol inhalation on the coast. The warm Adriatic water at 24–26 °C in summer allows prolonged swimming and movement — natural, joint-sparing exercise therapy under the Mediterranean sun.

Climate therapy: The subtropical climate with 2,400 annual sunshine hours and frost-free winters enables year-round outdoor exercise — coastal walks, cycling through the salt pans, and hikes in the surrounding hills.

History and Atmosphere

Portorož — the name means “Port of Roses” — owes its existence to the Benedictine monks who founded the Monastery of San Lorenzo in the 13th century and established the first salt pans. The monks recognised the healing properties of the salt pan mud and treated joint diseases with it — a tradition unbroken for 700 years.

The Sečovlje Salt Pans, 5 kilometres south of Portorož, have been in continuous operation since the 13th century and are now a protected nature park. In the shallow evaporation basins, algae, minerals and salt-tolerant microorganisms mature over months into the black therapeutic mud — Fango delle Saline — found nowhere else in the world in this composition. The salt pans are both a treatment centre and an attraction — a walk through the basins is a unique experience.

Portorož today is an elegant Adriatic spa resort with a long beach promenade, luxury hotels and a marina. The atmosphere is Mediterranean and cosmopolitan — Slovenian hospitality meets Italian flair (Trieste is only 30 kilometres away). The resort is compact, walkable, and surrounded by gardens and roses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the salt pan mud so special?

The Fango delle Saline matures in the shallow basins of the Sečovlje salt pans over months — a natural process in which salt-tolerant algae and microorganisms produce organic acids and bioactive substances found in no other therapeutic mud. Seven hundred years of uninterrupted cultivation have created a mud of unique composition.

Can I do a spa cure in Portorož in winter?

Yes — and this is one of the biggest advantages over Baltic spas. The subtropical climate with temperatures rarely below 5 °C and 2,400 annual sunshine hours enables year-round treatment with outdoor exercise. The winter months are also quieter and less expensive.

Is Portorož very touristy?

The beach promenade can be lively in July and August, but the spa district with its thermal baths and fango centre is separate from the tourist beach area. The spa season runs year-round.

Are there German-speaking doctors in Portorož?

Yes — due to the long Austro-Hungarian tradition and proximity to Austria, the spa doctors speak German. German-speaking care is well established. Compare Slovenian spas — see all comparisons.
