Treatments in Luhačovice
Vincentka inhalation: The defining treatment. Vincentka water is nebulised into micro-droplets of 3–5 micrometres — small enough to reach the finest bronchial branches. The patient inhales the mineral-rich vapour through a mouthpiece for 10–15 minutes, once or twice daily. The iodine liquefies mucus and acts as an anti-inflammatory; the lithium calms the mucosa; the barium promotes mucosal cell regeneration. The full therapeutic effect of Vincentka is only achieved through inhalation at the spring — bottled Vincentka loses CO₂ and part of its efficacy within 24 hours of opening. 1 — learn more.
Drinking cure with Vincentka: The water is drunk cold — on an empty stomach in the morning and before meals. The iodine reaches the thyroid and respiratory/”>respiratory mucosa via the digestive tract. The drinking cure complements inhalation and reinforces the systemic effect.
Respiratory gymnastics: Specially trained physiotherapists guide patients through breathing techniques that expand lung capacity and facilitate expectoration. The exercises are conducted outdoors in the spa park — the clean, pollen-poor air of the White Carpathians supports the therapy.
Climate therapy: The mild climate of the White Carpathians — at 250 metres altitude, protected by surrounding hills, with low humidity and clean, low-allergen air — creates ideal conditions for respiratory tract regeneration. Daily outdoor exposure is an integral part of the treatment plan.
History and Atmosphere
The first mineral springs at Luhačovice were documented in the 16th century, but the resort’s golden age began around 1900 when the Moravian physician Dr. František Veselý recognised the medical significance of the Vincentka water. He commissioned the Slovak architect Dušan Jurkovič to design new spa buildings.
Jurkovič created a unique spa architecture found nowhere else in Europe: a fusion of Art Nouveau and Moravian-Slovak folk architecture. Colourful wooden villas with richly decorated gables, carved balconies and folkloristic colour schemes — the Jurkovič House of 1902 is considered a masterpiece of Central European Art Nouveau and now serves as a museum.
The composer Leoš Janáček — one of the most important Czech composers of the 20th century — spent nearly every summer at Luhačovice from 1903 onward. He composed parts of his operas *Jenůfa* and *The Cunning Little Vixen* here. He wrote: “Luhačovice is the most beautiful place in Moravia.” The Janáček Memorial, in the house where he regularly stayed, preserves his piano and manuscripts.
Luhačovice is a lively spa town with perfectly preserved architecture, ten springs, twelve spa hotels and an active cultural life. The atmosphere is a unique blend of turn-of-the-century elegance and Moravian warmth. For guests with respiratory diseases seeking effective treatment in a culturally rich environment, Luhačovice has no equal.

Getting to Luhačovice from Germany
Luhačovice lies in eastern Moravia near the Slovak border and is the farthest Czech spa from Germany — a distance justified by the unique Vincentka water. From Nuremberg it is 580 kilometres (5 hours 30 minutes), from Dresden 540 kilometres (5 hours). The door-to-door transfer with German-speaking driver is recommended for this distance — you relax during the journey. Frequently Asked Questions
Can Vincentka inhalation replace asthma medication?
No — inhalation complements pharmaceutical therapy. Many patients report needing less rescue medication after a course. Any reduction must be decided exclusively by the treating physician at home.
How long does bottled Vincentka keep its effect?
Vincentka loses its dissolved CO₂ and part of its therapeutic effect within about 24 hours of opening the bottle. The full therapeutic effect unfolds only fresh at the spring — this is why the spa stay is irreplaceable. For home maintenance between stays, bottled Vincentka is sold in pharmacies but is a supplement, not a substitute.
Is Luhačovice also suitable for non-respiratory conditions?
Luhačovice is specialised on respiratory diseases. For other indications — digestion, musculoskeletal, rheumatology — the West Bohemian spas or Moravia’s other resorts are more appropriate. The unique architecture and mild climate make Luhačovice attractive for a general recuperation stay even without respiratory disease.
Why is Luhačovice so far from Germany?
The Vincentka spring is geologically tied to its location in the White Carpathians. The distance is the price of the unique healing water. The door-to-door transfer makes the long journey comfortable, and Vienna Airport offers a faster alternative. 1 — see all comparisons.
